Expand the EAA? You’re kidding, right?

Expand the EAA? You’re kidding, right?

Why it is called the “Education Achievement Authority” I will never understand. The EAA has virtually no achievement to speak of while it has managed to strip authority over public education away from those who are most qualified to exercise that authority. Although Gov. Snyder is trying his best to convince Michigan residents that stealing public education away from the public and putting it in his hands is the best thing for children, the truth is beginning to expose the lie.

From Sarah Cwiek of NPR Public Radio:

“It was like being thrown into the lion’s den”

But as the EAA goes through its second full school year, there’s more solid information on the district’s performance. It reveals some problems.

One major problem is enrollment. The data show that about one-quarter of all EAA students left the district between its first and second year (district officials have said this drop was “expected”).

The EAA’s first batch of state test results weren’t too promising, either. You can find some bright spots among the data. But overall, most EAA students’ MEAP scores dropped, or stayed about the same, as the previous year.

And a small but growing number of former teachers and administrators have started speaking out publicly about the EAA’s troubles.

“It started from the very beginning of school. It seemed like I was set up to fail,” said former Nolan teacher Delbert Glaze. “I pretty much felt like I was thrown into the lion’s den, and left to fend for myself the whole year.”

As an educator with more than 50 years experience teaching in the Detroit metro area, and who has been intimately involved with this issue since it first began infecting Detroit public schools, I can say with some authority that the full story of the EAA is far worse, and if the EAA is allowed to expand it will be disastrous for Michigan children. Any attempt to expand this disaster simply must be stopped.

Supreme’s endorsement of Michigan affirmative action ban predictable

Supreme’s endorsement of Michigan affirmative action ban predictable

I can’t honestly say it was surprising to me when I heard the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Michigan’s ban on affirmative action. This court has made a supreme mockery of justice on more than one occasion, perhaps most notoriously when they voted to give billionaires the right – and the tools – to purchase elections by funneling as much cash into the game as they feel like. The hell with leveling the playing field, this is mowing down the common folk to make way for the Tea Parties of the wealthy and the delusional not-quite-so-wealthy followers who cling to the belief that whatever is good for master is good for the slave as well.

Although the Court majority and its supporters are trying to spin the fiction that this was simply about affirming the vote of Michigan’s citizens who  did not think affirmative action was a good idea and needed to be trashed, the glaring truth of the matter is that this was just another brick in the wall. Citizen’s United. The Voting Rights Act. Then, earlier this month, the 5-4 decision which gives wealthy donors even more freedom to legally purchase any election they can afford. It is all part of a long game strategy to dismantle every step of progress this nation has made toward fairness and equality for the past 60 years or more, and this most recent decision is a race backwards to the future.

And now for some poetry…

And now for some poetry…

I’ve been writing poetry for years, and I figured it was finally time for me to collect these verses that I have been scribbling for the past forty years or so and put them in a single volume. Poetic Prancings is the name of the book and it is due out soon. Stay tuned for the release announcement, but meanwhile here is a taste of what’s inside. I may post a few more verses in coming weeks.

COMES THE REVOLUTION          (2012)

It is unfortunately true

That by Two Thousand Twenty-two

Those “one-percenter” corporate cats

And money-grubbing plutocrats

Who make a fateful mockery

Of our once-great democracy

Shall have had a decade’s warning

That the Revolution’s forming.

All of us should be dissenters—

Black and white and gray and gay.

Dare all “99-percenters”

Grab a Glock, or an A-K?

There can be no weak relenters—

Everyone must join the fray!

(Yet since we’re also normal men,

We’ll rack our rifles now and then

To smoke a joint and have a drink—

And then mayhap and maybe

We’ll pause and point and smile and wink

At some attractive lady!)
